EuroCIO traces its roots to the 1990s, when the role of the CIO became much more visible within large corporations across Europe. To define a clear vision within a more complex and diverse framework, CIOs expressed the desire to have a stress-free non-competitive environment, created by CIOs for CIOs, which would allow them to pursue exchanges all year round. Putting this vision into practice required the initial support of two organizations, CIGREF, a non-profit association of CIOs from French leading companies, and Finaki,.a technological events specialist. A Word about the Two Founding Organizations of EuroCIO 
| Created in 1970, CIGREF (Club Informatique des Grandes Entreprises Françaises) brings together 127 of the leading French and European corporations including 97 percent of the CAC 40 and 50 percent of the Euronext 100. CIGREF members represents all sectors of the global economy including banking and insurance, energy, retail, industry, services. With almost 40 years of experience, the association has become a fully-fledged player in the development of IT and telecommunications throughout the French and European corporate world. Member companies account for more than 120,000 IT and telecommunications professionals with four million individual end-users. Research carried out by CIGREF results in a number of benchmark studies being published every year. CIGREF has close links with state-run institutions and regulatory boards in France and Europe.

| Finaki, the technological events specialist, was founded in 1989 by a group of IT research consultants and is now present in France, Germany, and Italy. Since 1990, Finaki has organized the annual Entretiens Informatiques d’Opio for the CIOs of leading French companies and directors of frontline IT suppliers. The success of this event, held on the French Riviera, prompted Finaki to set up, from 1995 onwards, meetings along the same lines for professionals from the telecommunications sector, now held in the French Alps. Events have also been launched by Finaki branches in Germany and Italy.
